Once again, I have taken a long time to write my latest adventures in my blog. I have waited so long that I feel as though I am overflowing with stories and don’t have the time to write them all. I’m going to attempt to give an overview of some of the more interesting parts of my last few weeks.
Two weeks ago I was on my way to the CPR Certification Course I needed to take for the Babysitting Job I was starting. Somewhere between the subway exit and the building where the class was being held, I lost my cell phone. Instead of attending the class I spent the next two hours walking up and down 8th Ave between 42nd & 49th Streets. I walked over four miles in those two hours, stopped in all the little stores to ask if anyone had turned in a cell phone from the street. One store employee replied, “people aren’t that nice around here,” which didn’t help my hopes! I had to use the pay phones on the street to call Mike and find out if he had gotten through when calling my phone. The pay phones consistently didn’t work, ate my quarters, and smelled like pee. The only good moments of that morning were when I thought another phone had eaten my money so I slammed down the receiver and was surprised to find that not only the $0.75 I put in came back but also an additional $2.50 in quarters! It was like hitting the jackpot of pay phones! And finally, when I got a hold of Mike and he told me he had gotten through on my phone and it was at the Port Authority Police Station. Some wonderful and caring person found my cell phone up on 49th St and brought it all the way down to 42nd St to turn in to the police!
I finally attended the CPR class this past Saturday and am now officially certified, although I have already been out on a few babysitting jobs. So far the jobs have been easy since we are just in a hotel room and the only form of entertainment is the television. I am very quickly getting up to speed on all the Disney channel shows! Its also been very interesting seeing all the upscale hotels in Manhattan. The Waldorf Astoria is definitely the nicest and most elegant hotel I have ever been in and I wish all hotels I stay at could be that fancy.
The other piece of excitement was going to my first open call audition! It was for the National Tour of “Hairspray” and was everything you picture based on the movies and stories about them. I was #307 of 500 and spent quite a few hours hanging out in a jam-packed room full of actors warming up and stretching. They brought us into the dance studio in groups of about 75. The room was so full you could just barely turn in a tight circle. They quickly (in about 5 min) taught the routine, which was not super complicated but was super fast! I did my best but definitely did not ‘nail’ the routine. Unfortunately, they use the same audition combination for every open call so a lot of the other actors already knew the combination going in. The one thing that really surprised me was how unexpressive most people were when they were doing the routine for the director. To me, that’s the easiest part … just “look” like you know what you’re doing and having fun even though your feet might not be doing it exactly right! Well I didn’t make it to the next round but left feeling that after a few months of taking dance a couple times a week, I will definitely be at a level to get called back. Nevertheless, it was fun and interesting to see all the different personalities of actors.
Hopefully I will write more again soon! Thanks for reading!
